Meet the 10th Marsh Tacky foal to be born in the history of our program, it’s a filly! This is Barrier Island Carolina Girl’s third foal in the history of her broodmare career. We think she has saved the best for last. We have decided to retire her from breeding after this baby due to her age of 22 years old this year. This is a big filly that looks like she will have her mother’s head and larger size, with her Daddy’s roan, star and sweet personality. She will be available for sale starting in the fall so check with us if you have interest, we will be happy to provide you with more information.

Summer is here and the latest round of improvements to the She Shed are a wrap. It’s hard to stay cool this time of year but thankfully we have lots of new seating in the shade, fans, cold AC, a fridge to keep drinks cold, a new used bigger smart TV and free wifi for our volunteers, students, patrons and day tourists to enjoy. Stop by, learn more about our program offerings, pick up some free island real estate info and check out our merch! You can shop for shirts, hats, stickers, magnets, postcards, beverages and more. Our hours are Wednesday through Saturday from 11:30-4:30, otherwise by appointment. Also, be sure to browse our new shop online!

We are the proud new owners of a used tractor! Thank you to all of my real estate clients who have made this my best year yet and this purchase possible. Tears of joy would not justifiably summarize how good it feels to know we don’t have to manually buck a few thousand pounds of hay and feed in a day by hand anymore. El Capitan will be able to lift some logs onto the mill, pull my horse trailer, do hay rides, muck and drag our pastures, and so much more, too. Life is good!

Maybe one of our biggest dreams has just become a reality. Tony got the mill his heart has been set on for years. He found it on a small, obscure, online estate sale auction up in Minnesota last October. We won the bid, then it was shipped to Baker, the manufacturer in St. Louis. They spent a few months in maintenance on it, replacing hydraulic lines etc and it just arrived to Daufuskie. The name Big John is tribute to Tony’s father who passed away before we ever met and taught Tony so much about carpentry and construction. We will be selectively harvesting the timber on our property to make room for pasture and milling the logs into horse fencing, barn posts, beams, siding, decking…!

CLOVER FILLY 3RD FOAL BORN ON DAUFUSKIE MARSH TACKY SOCIETY

It’s a filly! She was born on St. Patrick’s Day evening. We were present for almost the entire labor and birth. What a miraculous experience. The third foal to be born on Daufuskie in around 50 years, this is the first time we have witnessed the birth. We were able to imprint this new life in that precious window of time when she will associate us as her family. We had our hands on her at her first breath, helped her get her spindly legs under her and start nursing. Flaca (Carolina Moon x DP) and Clover (sired by Lowther’s Lucero) are bonded, healthy and happy, she is a spitting image of her Daddy! This is the first foal to be born on our new location at Heritage Hall.

ESELITA AND ABLE LEAVE DAUFUSKIE MARSH TACKY SOCIETY

Farewell to our very first foal, Estelita Scurry as she embarks upon a new chapter her journey today. She, along with Southern Legends Tuff, are leaving the island to their new forever homes so we are feeling proud and hopeful for them. Estelita will be living near Clemson, SC and Southern Legend will be living in middle GA. Thanks Hawkins Heritage Farm for your help with hauling and match making. We are looking forward to following these two as they grow with their new owners.

Winter is arguably our favorite time of year on the island. There’s less heat, bugs, snakes and tourists. The season is short so you have to make the days count with jeans, boots, beach rides, trail blazing, bon fires, trout fishing and oyster roasts! It’s stone crab season too. These beautiful claws and clams were cooked in a white wine, butter and scallion sauce. Served with fresh lemon wedges, new potatoes and french bread with a homemade pesto and paired with (more) wine and bourbon, delicious! Join the Society and get invitations to bon fires, oyster roasts and cookouts like this!

DAUFUSKIE MARSH TACKY SOCIETY HURRICANE DORIAN EVACUATION

Beaufort County announced a mandatory barrier island hurricane evacuation so we are mobilizing and implementing our hurricane evacuation plan to our new property, Duncan Acres, located in Dale. We are on the barge and headed to the mainland now. We hope everyone stays safe during their evacuation travels!
