The first Marsh Tacky foals to be born on Daufuskie Island in (locals say) fifty years have arrived! Estelita, a blonde filly with a perfect dorsal stripe, white socks on all four feet (just like her Daddy) and a tiny star on her forehead was born on Friday morning, November 10, 2017. Just six days later Mateo, a leggy bay colt with a thin white stipe on his forehead and a single white sock was born. The sire is Lowther’s Lucero, and it is apparent now that the first foals to be born on Daufuskie in decades were conceived when our herd was displaced together at Melrose for Hurricane Matthew. Our babies are a living, silver lining to the storm and a symbol of perseverance for our entire community! You can give now in support of this historic occasion! There are many ways to be involved!
Your contribution to Daufuskie’s newborn foals today will ensure Daufuskie Marsh Tacky Society has the tools and resources needed to provide the very best care for them. Your donations acknowledge the resources that have already been spent by our organization which enabled this cornerstone of our mission to be accomplished. Founded in 2015, our mission is to promote and protect the critically endangered Marsh Tacky on Daufuskie Island through comprehensive breeding plus educational and special events programming.
The added costs and logistical challenges of running an equestrian facility on Daufuskie Island are great. Our team utilizes their personal tools and equipment, years of experience and working relationships in order to manage the ongoing needs of our horses successfully. Everything must be barged or ferried across which requires planning ahead and always having back up in case of an emergency situation. Some days hand us a curve ball which makes it seem impossible to get by, but the rewards of having the first SC State Heritage Horse born on Daufuskie Island in nearly five decades makes it all worth it.
We are seeking cash gifts, donations of equipment such as tractors, trucks and trailers, as well as volunteers in a variety of capacities. Your contributions are tax deductible to the fullest extent of the law. We see our work as a service to future generations, so that our kid’s kids can enjoy our South Carolina State Heritage Horse. In the sprit of #ValentinesDay give your loved ones a very special gift – help us fulfill our mission of promoting and protecting the Marsh Tacky on Daufuskie!
