5th Annual Marsh Tacky Beach Races on Daufuskie Island

People are still talking about the day that the finest Marsh Tackies raced upon the beautiful beaches of Daufuskie Island for infinite bragging rights.

The racing of Marsh Tacky horses on the beaches of South Carolina originated as a Gullah post-harvest tradition. It was resurrected in 2009 in part by the Carolina Marsh Tacky Association to raise funds and awareness for the Marsh Tacky horse and its status, history, heritage, and importance. The first few years’ races took place on Hilton Head and grew in popularity until the CMTA decided to seek alternative venues and reached out to Daufuskie Island.

The history, culture and heritage that the Marsh Tacky represents belongs to all of us and it should be shared by everyone!
